Day by day

Eleven nights, one rhythm

  1. Day 1 — Padang

You land at Minangkabau airport, West Sumatra. We meet you at arrivals, drive you to the harbour and settle you aboard in the afternoon. We slip lines around sunset.

  2. The crossing

An overnight steam, roughly 100 kilometres west into the Mentawai chain. The boat does the miles while you sleep.

  3. Dawn, day 2

You wake at anchor beside the first wave of the trip. Coffee on deck, boards into the tender, and a look at what the morning is doing.

  4. Days 2–10

The rhythm settles: surf, eat, rest, move. Each evening the captain and surf guide read the charts, and we reposition — often overnight — so you wake somewhere new. Macaronis, Lance's Right, Green Bush; the whole chain is in play.

  5. Day 11 — final evening

A last session in the afternoon light, then dinner at anchor. No rush; the flight is still a night away.

  6. Day 12 — home

We steam back to Padang in the morning and transfer you straight to the airport for your flight.

Honest answers

Who this trip is for

Most of our guests are intermediate surfers and above, comfortable taking off over reef. The Mentawais hold waves from playful to serious and the guide will match each day to the group, but most breaks here are shallow, fast and a long way from anywhere. The trip suits groups of mates who want ten uncrowded days together, and solo travellers happy to share a boat with people they have not met yet. Unsure whether your surfing fits? Tell us honestly when you enquire and we will advise.

It is not a trip for anyone who needs a beach within walking distance, or for those after a resort. This is a working surf boat — comfortable, well fed, air-conditioned — but the surfing comes first.

Logistics

The practical bits

Getting there. Fly into Minangkabau International Airport (PDG), Padang — usually via Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Return airport transfers are included; land on day one and we handle the rest.

Travelling solo. Solo travellers are welcome on shared trips; plenty of guests arrive alone and leave with a crew. Groups who want the boat to themselves can book a whole-boat private charter.

Insurance. Travel insurance is strongly recommended for every guest — make sure your policy covers boat travel, surfing and remote-area medical care.
